Observe and ask questions

What are you interested in? Your question should be answered by your experiment/research.
Find out information on your topic.

Form a hypothesis

Make a prediction of what you think is going to happen. What do you think will answer your question? A hypothesis is a scientific explanation that you can test. You must be able to do a fair test of the hypothesis.

A "fair test" occurs when you change only one factor (variable) and keep all other conditions the same.

Plan an experiment in which you can test your hypothesis. How will you collect data, keep a record of the experiment (journal), variables, and controls?
Do the experiment and collect results This is the experiment you will do. This is your materials, constant (control), and the variable (what you are changing).
Analyze results This is all the data you have collected and use to to figure out what happened in your experiment.
Draw conclusions Look at data, was your hypothesis correct? How or would you change the experiment?

Share your results with others -classmates, teachers, friends, parents, etc. What did you learn?
